The 3C CSPE Class went on a visit to Castlerea Prison as part of their Junior Certificate CSPE Action Project. They were taken on a guided tour of the medium security prison and learnt about life for a prisoner from the moment they enter the penal system, to short-term prisoners, those facing life sentences right through to those nearing the end of their sentences. Students saw the different types of cells prisoners are housed in from committal cells to isolation units to the divisions where the general population are housed and those that are kept on protection. They were warmly welcomed into the Visitors Centre and informed of the fantastic service they provide there for families and friends of prisoners at the prison. A heartfelt thanks to Jim Howe of the Irish Prison Service for the thorough and comprehensive tour of the prison.
