Junior Certificate Schools Programme (JCSP)

This programme helps teachers adopt a student-centred approach and provides students with a programme that meets their needs within the Junior Certificate. The JCSP aims to ensure that each student benefits academically and socially from their time in school and students experience success. The programme places a strong emphasis on the development of basic skills, in particular literacy and numeracy, which are relevant to both the school curriculum and everyday life.

Students participating in the JCSP follow the same subject syllabi and are assessed in the same way as their Junior Cycle peers in the Junior Certificate examinations. They gain a Junior Certificate outlining their achievements in the subjects taken, in addition to this, they receive a Student Profile which outlines the skills, knowledge and achievements that they have attained during this programme. They also receive a reference from the school. The programme has been very successful to date. Students have participated in initiatives such as Reading Challenges, Spelling Challenges, Habitat Studies, Maths Initiatives and Art Projects. Students have an opportunity to celebrate their success along with their family and friends on a yearly basis when a celebration is organised in the school.

Transition Year Programme

Transition Year is an optional one-year programme offered to all students after completing their Junior Certificate. This year offers students the opportunity to bridge the transition from Junior to Senior Cycle. The focus of the year is on providing the students with a wider educational experience and a balance between academic and practical studies. It encourages personal and social development and recognises the need for students to grow in independence. The TY programme in Coláiste Clavin has been very successful and the feedback from students and parents alike has been very positive. The development of our student’s confidence, maturity, team-working skills and communication skills are particularly evident. Wellbeing is at the core of the Transition Year Programme and as well as motivational speakers, students take part in CBD training with Aware.

Our TY Programme offers taster courses in all of the Leaving Certificate subjects, enabling students to make informed choices for the senior years. In addition, we offer courses in Film, Philosophy, Craft, Sport Leadership, Young Scientist, Gaisce, Debating, Life Skills, Safe Food, Nutrition, Design and many others depending on what students ask for and need, fully utilising the talents, interests, training and expertise of our wonderful teaching staff. TY offers the perfect opportunity for our most ambitious students and our most vulnerable students to get extra supports as they get ready for the challenge of Leaving Certificate.

Leaving Certificate Vocational Programme (LCVP)

The LCVP is a Leaving Certificate with a focus on enterprise and preparation for working life. This compulsory two-year programme combines the academic strengths of the Leaving Certificate with a dynamic focus on self-directed learning, enterprise, work and the community. In most ways the LCVP is like the established Leaving Certificate. LCVP students take two additional courses, called Link Modules, in the areas of Preparation for the World of Work and Enterprise Education.

Leaving Cert Applied Programme (LCA)

LCA is a two-year programme in which students are prepared for the world of work and also for most Post Leaving Certificate Courses. It is a distinct, self-contained two-year leaving certificate programme aimed at preparing students for adult and working life. It emphasises forms of achievement and excellence which the established Leaving Certificate has not recognised in the past. This programme covers General Education, Vocational Education and Work Experience. LCA is based on continuous assessment over the two years and prepares the student for the world of work helping to decide their future careers
